At Burslem we are immensely proud of our long heritage of producing and maintaining public memorials and war monuments.  Our expert craftsmanship is on display around the world and closer to home.

Globally Burslem’s work can be seen in many locations including France, Jamaica, Galipoli, Beirut, Algiers, Tyne Cot, Dar-Es-Salaam and Terlingthun and we were responsible for producing the 350 name panels on The Menin Gate in Ypres.

Locally we have been commissioned to design and supply many monuments including the new war memorial in Tonbridge, the design and reinstatement of the West Malling Royal Airforce base memorial stones at Kings Hill and the restoration of the historic drinking water fountain on St Leonards seafront.

Some of our high profile commissions include a plaque commemorating the Diamond Jubilee in 2012 which was unveiled by Her Majesty The Queen, a school plaque unveiled by The Countess of Wessex, Way Markers for the 2012 London Olympics and dedication plaques for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Burslem takes the same care and consideration in the cleaning and restoration of war memorials as we do in their manufacturing and as a nod to our long lasting history in 2010 we were selected to carry out the renovation of the war memorial at Carlton in South Yorkshire, some 90 years after producing the original in fact the client was insistent that Burslem carried out the work having produced and built the original monument. Is Burslem the oldest surviving masonry company in England?

Some public memorials require a degree of repair and refurbishment following cleaning to return them to their former glory while for others a clean is all that is needed.

Our talented team of stonemasons utilise their extensive knowledge of stone types to ensure the method of cleaning and any products used to achieve the optimum finish are suitable for the particular memorials concerned.

Whilst this may appear straightforward, a great deal of irreparable damage can be done to monuments and memorials when the wrong method or cleaning product is adopted (although perhaps the most common cause of damage is caused by the incorrect mortar mix used for pointing and plastic repairs). With many years of experience Burslem are specialists in the cleaning of memorials of all sizes and in a huge variety of locations from smaller village memorials through to monuments in busy cities.
